Staying with the Kodakkad family has been a suprising and wonderful experience. When I was planning my trip, I never expected that I would be so supported or so well taken care of as I have been at my homestay. The whole community here has redefined my definition of “selflessness” and it has been a joy to temporarily live in a culture that is so giving. The culture is also ancient, complex, and spectacular. Theyyam is a form of art and worship that is unlike anyting else. Nowhere else in the world are the devotees allowed to experience a manifestation of their god in human form, and with such regularity! Studying theyyam has helped me gain perspective on theater, religion, and the limits of human creativity. I speak no Malayalam and would have had a very hard time finding theyyams on my own.
