Madayipara Hill Rock (Madaipara)

Madaipara on which two famous temples, Madayi Sree Vadukunda Shiva Temple and Madai Sree Thiruvarkat Bhagavathy Temple (Madaikavu), in North Malabar situates is an area extending to 4 sq. k.m.  There is no thick habitation on this plateau land, as the entire area is more or less barren and not cultivable except small portions here and there.  The landscape is an attractive scene dock and the plateau is beautifully flat so that the breeze blows over day-in and day-out in the area giving high pleasure to the physique and mind for all those who take visit to the place. The pure and fresh air carrying perfumes of herbs flowing from west through Ezhimala hillocks gives extreme degree of solace to the inhabitants residing in the valleys of this hill.  The plateau does another invaluable service also to the villagers by preserving rain waters inside its bowels during monsoon seasons and gives the potable waters to the low lying areas  in hot summer through springs and well waters.  This system is very effectively hinders percolation of saline waters logged in the canals and rives in all the four boundaries of Madai Panchayath to the nearby areas.  Slops of the hill on all sides covered by thick vegetation render structural safety of the plateau land and contribute to the promotion of green and lush to the entire village.  The hillock is a paradise for the migrating birds even from Siberian wilderness, owing to is befitting environments to the flora and fauna.  This remains even now as a vast area for the cattle’s to freely graze when the cultivable lands and razing yards all over the state are fast disappearing.  Any threats to the existence of the present condition of Madaipara will undoubtedly jeopardize the balance of ecology of the village.

The hillock is called Madaippara because as its verbal name denotes this is a formation of different types of layers of minerals and earth covered by flat and hard barren rock on the top surface. Below the  surface of hard rock is 10 meters depth red soil earth is formed in another 5 meters.  Yet under the same a layer of lignite soil and without field efficiency can be seen in 10 to 15 meters and below this ball clay payer remains in 10 meters depth .  When these layers of earth culminates at the sea level a deposit of china day mineral can be seen to the thickness of 5 to 10 metes below the sea  level.  This layer conditions of earth in Madaippara heaps in preserving waters inside the bowels without allowing speedily drain of the water to the river and sea during monsoon.

Reminiscent of the history can be seen spread on different parts of this hill top will remind about the golden era of civilization once existed on this land in the bygone centuries.  Numerical historical monuments viz. square tanks, deep wells dug by cutting hard rocks without steps, remnants of fort, debris of castle, battle yards knows as “palayam”,  signs of shrines etc. now visible seen on various spots on this hill top will speak out the importance of excavation to bring the sleeping history to the lime light.

Madayipara as a Tourist Spot

Recently Madayipara has become major tourist attractions in Kannur districts and it attracts large number of visitors on daily basis. The major attractions are

Madayipara Plateau :  The landscape is an attractive scene dock and the plateau is beautifully flat so that the breeze blows over day-in and day-out in the area giving high pleasure to the physique and mind for all those who take visit to the place. This hillock is a paradise for the migrating birds even from Siberian wilderness, owing to is befitting environments to the flora and fauna. Madayipara is source of different types of butterflies, birds and flowers which attracts large number of photographers.

Yagabhumi (Yajnabhumi)  : In December 1978, astrologers opinions were sought by Vadukunda Shiva Temple  Renovation Committee  before the work was commenced. During that occasion, they predicted about the existence of significant spot near the temple, where divine “yagas” (yagnas) were observed by ancient saints. The point where they spotted out was a barren area, filled with hard earth. When the gravel and hard soil was unearthed to a depth of 2 feet in the spot, situating 50 meters north of the “Swayambhoo”, the remnants of dug in hard rock cutting stones with 20” x 20” x 2” measurement, a divine spot with covering proof of conducting “yagas” by saints and monks was revealed. 12 pits in 2” x 2” x1” measures dug by cutting hard rock and water channels with equal dimensions on all the sides were manifested in this sort. The archaeological surveyors who visited this place have ascertained that his is undoubtedly a spot where “yagas” were conducted during ancient period. Now the spot is preserved by the temple authorities as a invaluable monuments of “yagas”.

Vadukunda Lake : Never dry Vadukunda Lake where the holy dip of deity takes place. The lake which is lying 150ft height from sea level is the only source of water when summer goes its peak. This lake  will not go dry even in hot summer months and remains a source of nourishment to life forms at Madayipara. The Pooram festival of Madayi Kavu   held at Madayipara has been responsible for much of its fame

Remnants of fort & monuments : In and around Madayipara, one can find remnants from the past. At the southern side of the hill, stand the remains of a fort called Pazhi Kotta (Kotta means fort in Malayalam). Here one can also find watchtowers at the four corners of the fort. Between AD 14 and AD 18.  Madayipara used to be the site for the coronation ceremony of the rulers of the princely state of the erstwhile Kolathunadu. Here, a pond in the shape of a hand held mirror, connected to ancient Jewish settlers is another historic attraction.

Temples & religious Institutions : The two ancient temples, Madayi Sree Vadukunda Shiva Temple and Madai Sree Thiruvarkat Bhagavathy Temple (Madaikavu) are situated in Madayipara. The whole Madayipara was once part of Madaikavu Thiruvarkkat devasam and currently major part of the plateau was encroached and occupied by many in the surrounding area. There are other religious institutions like Wadi Huda, Christian Convent also there on this Plateau.
